Wow. This is huge. Coming out. It's huge. I grew up thinking that who I am is not good enough. That the world wanted me to be something other than I was. Than I am. My essence. It was really hard to be me when I thought that I had to be different than I was. You picking up what I'm putting down? I think a lot of people can relate to that sentiment -- not just us gays. Diversity is our greatest asset, so why are people so fearful of it? An opportunity, not a threat, so long as we perceive it...

As one of my childhood friends said on Facebook tonight, Can't help but feel the gloriously luminous supermoon is all for me. Hello Mr. Moon! And why not? Why not think it's all for you? Not in an ego-filled way that taps your hubris, but in a loving way that rocks your self-efficacy: the belief that you can do whatever you want to do in the world. Cause when it's in line with your higher self, it's automatically a win-win. The triple bottom line, baby: people, planet, and profit. As we work on the SOMO Leadership movement in Cleveland, the thought pattern we...

Well, it’s 2011 – how’d that happen so fast? I have to remember that time is not linear, the way we’ve devised it to be (and thus our expectation of how we experience it). Our calendar is (somewhat) man-made and can really just have easily picked April as the indicator of a new year (Why do we even call it April?) Some people even think spring is a better indicator of “anew” given the equinox. In any case, it is 2011 – and with the energy that goes ‘round with resolutions at this time, now’s a great pause for all us. What...

Well I got what I wanted. (That’s always nice to say!): An incredible new living and working space, just off Union Square. It’s a beautiful prewar building and my apartment, on the third floor, is flooded with natural light from the south and the east. It’s a bit “complex,” as my friend Emiliya says, meaning it is NOT cookie cutter: there are hardwood floors, exposed bricks, and even a tin ceiling. I am happy here. I knew I would be as soon as I walked into the open house the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving. But when unfurled after that (until now)...

➢ Use your VIA Strengths (measure them free by clicking here) to build energy and create momentum for how you be in the world. If you’re high on gratitutde for example, find innovative ways to use your gratitude, express your gratitude, be your gratitude. This will fuel your fire. ➢ Try not to let the pressure of time be against you. Time is highly paradoxical. It is not linear the way we have set it up to be. Love exactly where you are. After all, where else can you be? ➢ Remember the importance of clearing space to gain clarity and enlightenment - ending your...

Ever since hearing President Obama’s state of the union address last week, I couldn’t help but thinking what I need to do: ask for President W and his supporters for forgiveness – forgiveness for my own lack of support during his presidency, for saying things like “He’s not my President, he’s yours.” For mocking him continually (which was easy because my friends were doing the same). But not all my friends – and certainly not many of my family members, including my parents, who have a framed photo of the man (albeit in their basement), which arrived after they made...

Hello Positive People, Here’s hoping that your first month into the new year is off to a smashing start. If not, it’s never too late. Remember it’s all about the power of NOW. One thing that’s worked for me so far in 2010 has been around building self-regulation. According to research, Americans exude this as lesser of all character strengths. In other words, we’re not good at self-control. (Not surprising, right?) But, what we also know is that self-regulation is important - it builds attention (which is limited to begin with). So, my suggestion is to build self-control in an area of your...

I propose we attempt to set up learning organizations wherever possible to support a more positive evolution. According to Peter M. Senge, Director of the Systems Thinking and Organizational Learning Program at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Learning Organizations are places where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning how to learn together. Essentially, anywhere there are groups of people that spend chunks of time together can form learning organizations –...

[caption id="attachment_174" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Diva Angel"][/caption] Ahemmm . . . How are you? I am so super grateful: I write this as I head to two places: (1) to my high school alma mater, where I'm meeting with students to talk about the application of Positive Psychology in the band, a group I was a part of 15 years ago, when I was "one of them." I'm co-presenting at an international band director's conference in Chicago next month, alongside my high school band director, Curt, on how bands can flourish using Positive Psychology and Social-Emontional Leadership; this is our action research and (2)...
