As I sit her preparing for the launch of the Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) program in Philadelphia this Saturday, I am filled with amazing gratitude. Gratitude for this awesome program and my beautiful friend and co-conspirator, Emiliya Zhivotovskaya who teaches me so much: she teaches me to hustle with heart, to learn with vigor and to live with integrity. It wasn’t that long ago that CAPP was just an idea and now, we are beginning with our first rollout outside the NYC market. It’s a good day! I am grateful for the 25 students who have registered to join this...

RIP Maya Angelou -- (1928-today) and thank you for your courageously bold and beautiful voice. I know why the caged bird sings resonates in my heart, too. Power over others master --> slave --> dog Herstory repeats itself. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings A free bird leaps on the back Of the wind and floats downstream Till the current ends and dips his wing In the orange suns rays And dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage Can seldom see through his bars of rage His wings are clipped and his feet are tied So he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill Of...

I will share with you an essay my brother, Todd (1971-1991) wrote as one of his personal statements for admittance to college in 1989. Todd was always attuned to environmental causes and even founded and named the club which still exists in our high school alma mater today, SOPE (Save Our Planet Earth). I love how he begins the essay with the Stevenson quote on love and ends with a call-to-action for SOcial-eMOtional leaders to "give a little more care" to the environment, our responsibility. He says, "These things can be measured only in terms of the satisfaction of living." Without...

...on the 11th. Love it. 1. Frame what’s come before, including 2010 + the first ten days of 2011, positively. We choose how we think. Choose to think about yourself and your past with positive lenses. It’ll help move you forward. 2. Get clear about what you want going forward. Look here for some ideas about how to do that. Be careful to know the difference between what you need and what you want. Set your intentions and commit. 3. Express some future gratitude around what you want, as if it’s already here. 4. Develop a capacity for spirituality: for seeing something(s) bigger than yourself. It’s way important for a life...

Today is the highest of the Jewish holy days: Yom Kippur (I love saying that with my gentile accent!). My Facebook status and Twit feed read: Am realizing we don't have to be Jewish to seek forgiveness today. Traditions are good, even when we borrow them. Atoning is about clearing psychological and emotional space, a task that I take quite seriously with myself and my clients. Who will you risk having a conversation with to ask for forgiveness? Don’t forget forgiving yourself! We are often our worst critics. Last week, the Jews celebrated Rosh Hashanah symbolizing the start of a new year...

[caption id="attachment_208" align="alignleft" width="204" caption="Gotta love an AHA! moment"][/caption] When I was out walking Rocco this morning before my first client arrived, I had a big revelation about me and my work in the world. My job as a coach is intuitive – it is my calling, my passion. But I still have the voice in my head that says, sometimes, “you’re not good enough (at asking questions)” or “you don’t know enough (about positive psychology).” I grapple with this voice some days as I prepare to meet clients. It gets in the way. But today I thought differently. I...
