In response to the continuing failure of many research-based interventions to create systems change at scale, I am happy to announce a new initiative – The Change Lab – I’ve co-founded with Michelle McQuaid and Michelle Etheve. The Change Lab hosts conversations that challenge and amplify frameworks, tools and best practices which increase our confidence, motivation, and impact as change-agents working powerfully together in beloved community. We will re run the Certificate In Creating Positive Change – a twelve-week online experience beginning March 17. If you’ve been trying to help people, teams, workplaces, schools, or entire communities to create positive changes and feel that...

This summer I attended the Sixth World Congress on Positive Psychology in Melbourne, Australia. I gleaned many insights, strengthened old and made new connections, spoke on several panels, won the positive organizational intervention challenge award. Colleagues and I created a high-tech and high-touch system called “Feedforward” to help organizations step up how they have development conversations that actually work. I also got clearer on my own research agenda for the PhD I’m working on to build systems-informed positive psychology. My research serves to enhance the efficacy of positive interventions and increase our collective social impact. Social impact is anything that improves...

I wrote this in 2008. I lifted it from my MAPP capstone project, the final requirement for my advanced degree in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Social-emotional (SOMO) Leadership was just an idea in 2008 and I was ready to take some social-emotional leadership at that year's family Easter!   I realized the need for social-emotional leadership within my own network a few years ago when I saw one of the youngest members of our clan exhibiting some troubling behaviors on Easter. This young boy joined the men in the family room in a friendly betting pool that my Uncle Charlie,...

I've been sleeping on other beds since March 24 (keep your mind out of the gutter), as I've traveled the east coast to work on related projects: systems interventions using the SOcial-eMOtional model of change. I've also spent quality time with family, friends and dear colleagues -- sometimes they're all rolled into one -- and am coming back home to Cleveland today feeling refreshed and reenergized. While my bed is in Cleveland, I realized something on this past trip: that I have homes in other places, too. I know what they mean when they say: home is where the...

Louis Alloro, M.Ed., MAPP, is a Fellow at George Mason University’s Center for Consciousness & Transformation, and owns a NYC-based consultancy which specializes in consulting (facilitating + coaching) services to learning organizations and individuals of all kinds. Louis uses a unique, proprietary approach to building social, emotional, psychological, and communal capital which facilitates growth and resilience, even in the face of challenges. He partners in the SOMO (Social/Emotional+) Leadership Movement, a city-wide intervention in Cleveland, Ohio, teaching positive psychology in learning labs all across town: in businesses, schools, community groups, living rooms -- and baking principles of applied positive psychology into as...

I drove 400 miles to Cleveland, Ohio yesterday to continue a newer chapter of my life called "My Dreams are Coming True." I swear, people--this stuff works! It's happening in my life and it's because I'm learning to think differently. Trust me, please. I'm not just talkin' smack. But let me tell you, the past few weeks have been filled with mixed emotions. Lots of anxiety was coming up for me in New York. (I'm learning too that my fear shows up in strange, strange ways . . . almost hard to notice in real time, which is why hindsight is a beautiful thing.)...

[caption id="attachment_523" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Louis Joseph and Louis Thomas"][/caption] I had a great SOMO moment today with my dad. We were in his car driving (obviously) and catching up. He said, "I've been selling lots of jobs lately -- most of the sales calls I've been going on turn into sales" (he's had a contracting business for the past 30 years and I used to work with him). I responded, "Awesome, dad! Why do you think?" (i.e. how do you explain your success to yourself?) He paused and then said, "I don't know -- I suppose all the competitors send used-car like...

I was recently asked to write some fodder on what inspires me for a teacher, colleague and friend doing a collective inspiration project. Here is my submission: With so much talk of mavericks a few seasons ago, I could not help but think about who fits that bill? Is it Barack Obama for his ability to inspire hope? Harvey Milk for following a civil rights dream? Was it Mother Teresa who touched the lives of people no one else wanted to help? Who are mavericks closer to home? Is it my friend Bright who helped me change a belief system about...
