[caption id="attachment_1174" align="alignleft" width="300"] These are my most beautiful parents on the night of their 50th wedding anniversary party, August 2013[/caption] I am a (maybe 'the') suitability zealot in our family. On holidays, I'm the one to take out a second pail to recycle all of the wine and water bottles we go through. I'm often given a hard time by the "powers-that-be" that it's just too much work on a day with such hustle and bustle. "But look," I'd say, "It's really not. Look how easy this is," as I'd affix a sign on the one pail that says "recycle...

SOMO Leadership Labs launched as a social-experiment in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a magical time of synchronicity, synergy, faith, and love. The work has been in inviting people into dialogue to think about how they think. This conversation is about their own wellbeing (mind/body/spirit) with the intention that they become more effective at facilitating this conversation with others. We’ve hosted SOMO learning labs in all sorts of places--in businesses, schools, community groups, peoples’ living rooms, public parks and bars. Our first lab was on Valentine’s Day 2011 and I remember the feeling of knowing Cleveland is where I need to be...

This fall when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in a "V" formation, you might be interested in knowing what science has discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learned that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. People who share common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on...

I will share with you an essay my brother, Todd (1971-1991) wrote as one of his personal statements for admittance to college in 1989. Todd was always attuned to environmental causes and even founded and named the club which still exists in our high school alma mater today, SOPE (Save Our Planet Earth). I love how he begins the essay with the Stevenson quote on love and ends with a call-to-action for SOcial-eMOtional leaders to "give a little more care" to the environment, our responsibility. He says, "These things can be measured only in terms of the satisfaction of living." Without...

My mom always said "no grass grows under his feet." "A bull in the china shop" was another popular metaphor for Little Louis. What can I say? I like to get going. What I'm learning, though, is that to sustain, I need support. We all need support. I yearn for real we: team. But am I/are we wired for this - or, have we been conditioned with scarce perceptions? These days, while I'm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, I'm also traveling back and forth between here and Northern Valley, NJ -- both places I'm facilitating SOMO leadership, a concept to help learn...

here’s to the crazy ones; the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers; the round pegs in the square holes; the ones who see things differently, they’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. you can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. about the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things; they push the human race forward. and while some may see them as crazy, we see genius; because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that do. -Jack Kerouac/Steve Jobs ...
